My fit bit tells me that I walked 0.47km (27 floors, 7055 steps - I am not a mouse, so 7K steps is more than 0.47km). I walked the kids to school = 2km. I went for a walk at lunch break = 1km. 

Yesterday, it told me the distance was 0.43km while I did at least 4km... 

What can I do to get it right?

Check to see if your stride length is set to something obviously too low.

How do I measure and adjust stride length for my Fitbit device?

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
