For 3 nights in a row, I walked my treadmill until I reached 10,000 steps. Several hours later the treadmill steps disappeared and left me with only the steps I had before the treadmill, even though the treadmill's time and distance statistics remain. This disappearance occurs near midnight each night, but before the actual midnight reset to zero.

I might have solved my own problem. At these times when my treadmill steps were being lost later in the night, I discovered that Strava was running in the background on my phone. And Stravia only detects time and pace, and very little distance, or steps. So later, when Strava somehow syncs with Fitbit, the very few step Stravia data overwrites the thousands of Fitbit steps. I will test this theory later, but I'm pretty sure that's what was going on.
