My Fitbit Charge 3 also has a black screen.  I have tried changing the clock face, holding the side button multiple times & restarting.  My screen remains, sadly, black.

I'm on my third Fitbit 3 and now it is starting to do the same thing as the first two. The first two just went to the complete black screen but this one is now showing signs by slowly fading and I can't read it.

Was the Fitbit company able to help you at all?  It seems a very short life when they are so expensive.
