Charge 3 steps inaccurate

I have a new Charge 3, used it yesterday for the first time. Had about 17k steps, which seemed about right. After this morning’s walk I had about 11k. I didn’t hardly look at it during a busy day with a lot more steps, when I did check at about 10 PM it only said 4,800. What’s wrong?
