Charge HR will not update

I replaced on Charge HR (it broke apart after two years of use) with a different Charge HR.  It seemed to connect correctly to my account.  I can sync with it.

 

But I get a message: "Your Charge HR needs an update before you can use it'.  

followed by 'Do not close this app while the Tracker is updating'.  with 'looking for tracker' followed by 'updating tracker'.  Meanwhile, the device shows a progress bar.

 

The update never completes.  I tried several times.  I get a screen with 'Could not complete your Fitbit Charge HR update.' though the device still shows a progress bar.  It times out after some time and the progress bar goes away.  I cannot retry while this progress bar is still showing.  

 

How to get the update to complete?  Is there some kind of reset that I can do?  

 

Despite getting 'Your Charge HR needs an update before you can use it', it still seems to work.

You can try a factory reset.
