How to not lose data when replacing a device?

My Charge HR was coming apart, so I got a replacement device. In order to avoid losing any data, I synced the data yesterday evening before removing the device, and setting up the new device (all using the latest version of the Android app).

Unfortunately, as soon as the new device was connected, my step count (and total distance) for the day was wiped out. Strangely, the floor count was retained, as were logged exercises and sleep (minus any periods of restless sleep)...

Is this a known issue that can be avoided, or just bad luck?

I had an Alta HR and upgraded to a Charge 3 today. I synced the Alta before replacing it with the Charge, and it looked like all the data had transferred over - except for my hours with more than 250 steps. The app is showing I scored 8 out of 9 hours today, but the Charge is only showing 3 of 9! It looks like the Charge is only registering the hours AFTER I replaced the Alta. I think I switched devices about 3pm, so I think the Charge is only registering the hours since then. As long as the app is right I don’t mind, but  it will be interesting to see if the Charge correctly registers all the hours I do tomorrow.

It shouldn't be a problem tomorrow or going forward. For some reason, trackers only register the 250 steps per hour that they themselves do, so if you have more than one tracker on your account and switch in the middle of the day, you'll run into the same thing.
