Welcome to the Community Forums @fitgorl! The Samsung A40 is not yet a supported device by the Fitbit app. You can see the list at: Which phones and tablets can I use with my Fitbit watch or tracker?
Below you'll find all the Samsung phones that are officially compatible with Fitbit:
Please keep in mind that when a device is not supported we cannot guarantee its functionality with the Fitbit app. It might work at a certain time and then it can stop working out of nowhere after an update. This is because the app is not optimized to that device and any change could impact the performance.
If your A40 supports BLE (AKA Bluetooth 4.0), I recommend giving the setup flow a try.
If setup does not work, I recommend setting up and syncing via a device listed as supported or using a computer. Our team is always working to test and add more Android devices to the supported devices list, so keep an eye open for updates.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
