When I manually log an activity, say a walk, where I put in the time and duration, my Fitbit totals for steps and active minutes goes DOWN.
if I delete the exercise, the active minutes and total steps returns to the previous sum.
Anyone else see this

When you manually log a workout, whatever parameters you input override whatever data fitbit actually recorded. It is as if Fitbit figures the reason you are manually logging the activity is because you were not actually wearing the tracker, so it tries to figure out what the data likely was just from the parameters you input. The best solution if to use the Exercise App right on your wrist to record the workout as it happens, recording the start and end times and workout type. That will use the actual recorded data, and you won't have to log anything after the workout is done.
In my opinion, manually logging workouts is way overdone and usually leads to discarding the data that people are using the fitbit to record.

@JohnnyRow , Thank you for your detailed explanation.
@gmlasher , A warm welcome to the Community! Thank you for your message.
Just wanted to jump in and add just a little point. Please keep in mind, that the active minutes are tracked with help of your heart rate (zones)
For some activities that you log in manually, there is no heart rate record, so that the active minutes can only be estimated.
Hope this helps.

That makes some sense.
However what it should do is look at the time frame that I input and assign the heart rate numbers and steps to that exercise and not deduct it from the total.
The data is all there so it is a simple calculation for wrist worn computer.
The reason I have to log manually is my display is blank. Sometimes I can repeat the steps by memory, other times I can’t so I log manually
But thanks for your answer

@gmlasher , Thank you for your reply and feedback.
I see and follow your train of thoughts, that makes also some Sense.
But at this time if you log something manually it will overwrite the records of the tracker, as you are giving an input that happened on the same time frame.
Because sometimes the Charge is left on the backpack or pants, it might have different readings as the one you put in, when logging an activity.
Have you already received assistance regarding the display of your Fitbit?
What model are you using?
What do you see on it? (snow, lines, bright display, etc)
What have you tried 'till now?
See you around.
Hope this helps you further.

Thank you for your answer to manually logging.
where I work , in the handheld Computer industry, that would be considered a MAJOR DESIGN FLAW, and it would be fixed immediately
As to the display issue, the screen gradually faded. First I had to go into a totally dark room to see anything. Then it faded to black. No lines at all.
I tried everything recommended., multiple times. I eventually **ahem** canned the device and got a new tracker, not yours since two design flaws on one device is two design flaws too many
