Over sensitive step counting

My charge2 is to sensitive counting steps I am right handed and wear it on my left and have it set on handiness left and wrist left.

sunday night I wore it to bed and woke up with it saying I had done 122 steps while a sleep and last night I took it off before bed and left on my table to find this morning I have walked 15 steps without having it on or moving from picking it up.

also at work it seems to be picking up hundreds of steps without walking anywhere as I work with my hands.

is there anyway to resolve this as it makes it a bit pointless wearing it especially as we have weekly challenges against friends.

thanks

Hi @CynthiaD.! The vibrations coming from the movement of the motorcycle, are recognized by your Charge 2 as steps. When I'm on the motorcycle, I put my Charge 2 inside my backpack but still counting steps and some floors. Of course not that much as if you were using it on your wrist, but still. I can suggest you something else, I recommend to download DriveBit, which is an application that will prevent this extra data to be tracked while driving.

Give it a try and let me know how it goes!

My problem is the calories not the steps

@CynthiaD., as long as your Charge 2 keeps tracking a lot steps (even if you are not actually doing step-based activities) it will continue tracking many calories burned, since according to the Fitbit, you are exercising a lot. You can also check it out your personal information, just to make sure that your BMR was entered correctly. That could also affect your calories burned amount.

Give it a try!

Took a long ride on my Gold Wing motorcycle yesterday.  In the first 112 miles the Charge 2 went from 3,920 steps to 12,710, or 8,790 steps gained.  I walked no more than 200 steps at a coffee shop in that time, rest was riding on the Wing.

Then I put the Charge 2 in my pocket. and rode another 73 miles.  Started at 13,131 and finished with 14,200.  But we stopped and I forgot I was in a 'test', walked an estimated 1,000 steps.  So the net gain was negligible.

I was watching my wrist - and at higher speeds there was a barely noticable vibration even though the Gold Wing is the smoothest bike in the business. Enough to fool the Charge 2.

When I looked on the app this morning, Charge 2 had thought I was on a bicycle ride!  I did find something interesting - my resting pulse is normally in the 50's, but my average pulse on this long 'bike ride' was 70.  Who thought a restful motorcycle ride could be aerobic.

I'm not too concerned about all this, by the way.  Above just for information.  I am still amazed at what the Charge 2 knows about me.

Yeah I understand.. I just purchased the new Fitbit charge 3 and I was putting my hair up and it counted a lot of “steps” but I was sitting in my bed. I might end up returning it just because I wanted it to help me be more active but if it’s not accurate I won’t waste the money

I woke up, brushed my teeth, and I had 700 steps counted on my Versa since I wear it on my dominant hand (and indicated that in the setup).  Resetting didnt help. Sorry but if this thing cant do its job, what's the point of having it. I never had an issue with the pedometer apps on my samsung phone. There are other perks to the Fitbit like the sleep tracker but I mainly bought it to count steps. We should not be expected to take it on as off all day so if you cant get the sensitivity correct, there's no point in having it. Will return it today

I agree with you! I also bought the Charge 2 mainly to count steps and think the answer I got from customer service is unreasonable:

“For the vast majority of customers, the amount of stray steps accumulated is negligible when compared to the entire day.”

Personally, I don’t think 8000 stray steps in a day (when perhaps 2000 were completed) should be considered acceptable. This is, in my mind, not a properly functioning watch. It’s certainly not mentioned in the sale information and could perhaps even be considered false advertisement. I also got the following reply:

“…Charge 2 does not need to be repaired since it is working properly. This is an expected behavior on the device. Fitbit devices have a finely tuned algorithm for step counting. The algorithm is designed to look for motion patterns that are most indicative of people walking. The algorithm determines whether a motion's size is large enough by setting a threshold. If the motion and its subsequent acceleration measurement meet the threshold, the motion will be counted as a step. If the threshold is not met, the motion won’t be counted as a step.”

Apple's Health App also counts steps, and most of the time it matches my Charge 2 within 10% on steps and even closer on distance traveled.  The exceptions are when I am motorcycling and bicycling. (Oddly, while it counts when actually bicycling, it doesn't count on the excersize bike machine!!??) I assume the differences are because the fitbit is on my wrist whereas the Iphone is in my pocket.  The problem is that my Iphone isn't always in my pocket, especially when the phone is on the charger or used as the speedo/odo on my bicycle.
Oh well - what did we do before we started counting silly steps, anyway?
Actually, the feature I really like on the Charge 2 is sleep tracking.  I can't believe how right on it is.  I saw a murder mystery once where the boyfriend got off because his fitbit showed he was sound asleep when his girlfriend was murdered.  The heart rate feature is also pretty good, as is weight tracking.

This is the most helpful thread I have found in years. You are actually trying to help. I have tried all the suggested things restarted Fitbit, changed handedness, everything I could find. It still counts steps when I am in a rocking chair. 1000's of steps. I have dealt with this for years. I can't edit my data every time everyday(truly every day) that it does this. I hear other models of Fitbit don't do this. Is there a reason that software can't be applied to all the Fitbit models. I bought the charge 2 to count my steps, Hoping it would do a better job then the charge HR did. It didn't and now I hear it is happening on the charge 3. It has gotten incredibly frustrating. This is the most helpful

Bought as a 50th birthday gift need to loose weight for a major 10hr operation I had stage breast cancer and a full lymph node clearance in my left arm! So unable to wear this on my left wrist So having to wear this on my dominant wrist my right arm. Totally useless as it counted 2500 steps when I groomed my half newfound/half labordor dog!!!

Why can’t I reduce its sensitivity. Should of bought a cheap padomitor from weight watchers for £20. Rather have this expensive giftthst will cause an ungrateful gift argument as I  will need to ask my partner to change as it’s  no FIT for purpose!
