Resting Heart Rate Increase (Charge HR)

Does anyone know why this could be happening? For the past few months, my resting heart rate has consistently been between 69-72. Now for some reason it is increasing daily, and I have not changed my routine at all. (I workout 4-5 times per week; average 13-14,000 steps per day) Typically your resting heart rate is supposed to decrease when you're more active. I know my Fitbit is not always going to be 100% accurate for measuring things like this, but I'm still curious. Any thoughts?

Hello @Nicole_Cross and welcome aboard to our community! The resting heart rate it may change. Note that it take some time for the average can be correctly calculate to determine what is your resting heart rate. While more you use it, the numbers will settle down. Your resting heart always is higher than your heart rate while you are asleep, so don't be surprised if your resting heart rate is higher than the lowest number that you see in your heart rate graphs.

One of the community members has some remarks about this that you may found useful: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Get-Fit/Fitbit-surge/m-p/851557#M15516

Hope this helps and see ya later.

I've seen similar behaviour. My resting heart rate has increased as I've lost some weight and exercised more. My pulse, when taken by the Nurse/MA at my doctor's office has always been in the mid-60s. My resting heart rate was reported by the CHR in the low 70s, and has been climbing ever since.

Sure, I get that mathematically, it takes time for average numbers to stabilize, but this shouldn't be averaged over time - it should be showing for a single day (since that's what the graph shows - resting HR by day). I'm not sure how the CHR determines what resting HR is, but as a person gets more fit, it should stay steady or show a decrease, not an increase.

The same thing's happening to me.  It's been steady from 60-62 for months and now all of a sudden it's going up steadily to 64-65.  The only thing that's happened is my thyroid meds were decreased; rate should be SLOWER.

I find during the summer my RHR rises a few beats over the rest of the year; most folks consider it normal as your heart is required to work a bit harder to help cool your body.

Here's from this summer:

The same thing is happening to me. For the last 4 months, my average RHR has been between 56 and 59, as of a few days ago it's been 64,65. My routine and nutrition intake are the same and my I keep my watch and skin clean. Not sure what is causing the increase.

My resting heart rate rises and falls at different times during the month, so for the FitBit Females out there, you might notice an increase during ovulation (roughly the mid-point between periods) and a decrease once your period starts. Mine will fluctuate from the upper 50s to as much as the upper 60s.

Thank you Nurse Vickie.  I was really curious.  Mine has been in the high 40's since i got my fit bit in April other than one day in the first week and suddenly climbed this week to low 50's again.  I am 52 and have missed my cycle since February now (first time) and thank goodness, no other notable symptoms but appears I may be going in to menopause.  I'll have to watch this, maybe I'm ovulating ;(.  Kind of hoping it's really over that easily, leaving as quietly and quickly and suddenly unexpectedly as it showed up so many years ago.

I'm mystified too? Mine has gone from 48 to 60 months incrementally over 10 days or so? And I'm doing masses of exercise? Tennis, waking. BodyBalance? So annoying.

Have your thyroid checked if your levels don't normalize

I have noticed something similar. My resting is around 54 yet after a major event, for several days to a week after the event, my resting increases slowly up to 60, levels out and then starts dropping again. If I don't do any cycling for a week or more (due to work/weather) it will go even lower.

I average 10-13000 steps a day and ride between 100-250 miles a week.

Any clues or feedback is welcome.

It is normal for the resting heart rate to fluctuate and 2-3 beats more should not be concerning, as perivous commentator said, it could be your cycle. However if your heart rate rises day after day it might be a sign of overtraining. I have experienced this myself. Your sympathetic nervous system is more active during recovery than when you’re well recovered. If your resting heart rate is elevated, your body could be in a state of overtraining due to too much training and too little recovery.  Try to give your self a couple of days of rest more than you usually would give your self in a week and see what happens.

@Babak_1234, many folks, myself included, have found our resting heart rate increase if we were getting sick; how have you been feeling recently?

FWIW, the Fitbit RHR calculation is virtually always higher than your minimum heart rate while sleeping.  Looking at my recent heart rate graphs on my phone, I see the following:

  • Sleeping Heart Rate minimum (five minute plot): 33-35
  • Resting Heart Rate: 41-43
  • Today's Resting Heart Rate: 41
  • Last Thursday's Resting Heart Rate: 45 (I was feeling a bit ill, nothing serious though)

I find that my resting heart rate increases when I have large meals, lots of carbs (i.e. wine), or if I am not feeling well. Drop my carbs, heart rate drops. Interesting...

Nicole_Cross, were you by any chance pregnant? This has been said to happen when people are unexpectedly pregnant.

Dear Nicole, can you update us on the story of your resting HR?

I have had an experience of being sick in the past when my resting HR was getting higher and higher before the flue-day. Then went back to good baseline again.

Now, unfortunately i have a story of my resting HR always being at least +5 from what used to be, an then since Feb 2017 i go up and down, and up and down, +/15 HR beats. I am watching my food, alcohol, dropped caffeine and i do exercise. I dont get it!

What is your experience since you have posted it?

Take care

Kat

Same issue here, though I think it's related to stress and anxiety. I've never been over 62bpm in the last 2 years.  time to see a doctor?
