Treadmill vs. Fitbit

While using the Treadmill setting to record exercising today, I noticed a HUGE discrepancy.

Treadmill said I walked 2.40 miles, but Fitbit only clocked 1.70 miles.  Is it more accurate to use the run or walk setting vs. treadmill?  Or is something wrong with tracking?

I was careful not to rest my arm on the handles too much - as I’ve noticed in the grocery store, if I push the cart with the Fitbit hand, it doesn’t track my steps.

My understanding is that Fitbit estimates miles based on a stride length stored in your profile. Assuming the treadmill mileage to be accurate (which could be a big assumption), it could be that your actual stride on the treadmill is longer that that the Fitbit is using.
