Yes.

It needs to connect to the GPS on your phone since the Charge 2 does not have built in GPS.

without the phone it will still log a run but only time and a calculated distance (based on your stride length) but not a map of your run.

That depends @lo9anl, if you want to record your run with GPS giving a map for your record, then yes you will need your phone. Otherwise I suggest going into the Charge 2 settings and turn the GPS off.
