Sometimes the heart rate heart is solid and pulsing and others times it is hollow outlined in white and pulsing. Which one is right ?

I think the display changes depending on which heart rate zone you are in.  I don't remember offhand which display type signifies which zone, but I expect  you will see that one of those type displays is when your heart rate is higher.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
