Automatic Detection vs Starting Workout

I am brand new to wearing a Fitbit Inspire 2.

If I am about to go for a vigorous walk including going up and down stairs (yeah, I know it sadly doesn't track stairs), I believe the device will automatically detect elevated heart rate and will log increased activity through several metrics.

My question is: is there a benefit to "starting a workout" using the buttons on the device before commencing the activity or does it automatically log the same things without doing so?

Thanks in advance for any help on this!

Although many people refuse to use the Exercise App, starting and ending it on the device, I am a strong advocate of the advantages of generally using buttons on the device.  That guarantees that your workout will always be counted as such, and lets you specify the exact start and end time.  It also lets you choose what the workout category is, rather than relying on Fitbit to properly figure out what you are doing based only on movement pattern of your wrist.

However, the one exception might be for walks, which Fitbit generally gets right on its own.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

I completely agree with you.  After getting my Charge 5 I ALWAYS select Bike Ride from the Exercise app because that is the ONLY way to get a mapped analysis of the ride.  btw, I have an iPhone 8 + and have elected to use the Charge 5's internal GPS only and have NEVER experienced any issues.
