The calorie count is so massively out on mine.

Just to check it, I took it off for a day and just sitting on my dresser it registered no steps, no activity but I managed to burn almost 700 calories????

What is the point of this if its always wrong, so disappointed!!!!!

Actually, it's working just fine!

As well as tracking calories burned through activity your fitbit also tracks your BMR calories. These are the calories you burn just keeping your body alive (even when asleep). They are calculated from your profile settings for age, height, weight etc so you needn't be wearing your fitbit to get them. What you are seeing includes the total BMR calories burned since midnight. Having several hundred by the time you get up is quite normal.

But I'm not even wearing it so how can it calculate anything?

That's because the BMR calories can be calculated just from your profile settings - it doesn't need a fitbit to track anything. They burn at a constant rate day and night regardless of whether you are sleeping or running a marathon. Any calorie burn from tracked activity is added to your BMR calories to give the total shown on your fitbit and app.

If you're still not sure then there are several BMR calculators online if you google for them. You can use these to check fitbit's calculations.
