Hi

my Fitbit inspire arrived today and I charged it up and downloaded the app and it said I already done 854 steps (hadn’t worn it) I put it on and walked to another room and it jumped to 1356? Can anyone shed any light? Thanks

Do you mean steps or calories (you mention calories in the title but steps in the post)?

The data for the first day can be confusing as you get some steps just from random movement uring setup and you get some calories (your BMR calories) calculated from your profile settings.

Once the counts reset at midnight then you should get a proper picture of what's going on.

ok, no problem. It's probably the BMR calories that are causing the confusion (they confuse most people when they start with fitbit - they certainly confused me!).

As well as tracking calories burned through activity your fitbit also tracks your BMR calories. These are the calories you burn just keeping your body alive (even when asleep). They are calculated from your profile settings for age, height, weight etc so you needn't be wearing your fitbit to get them. What you are seeing includes the total BMR calories burned since midnight. There's more information on this here: Help article: How does Fitbit estimate how many calories I've burned?

It is a bit

confusing because I thought you’d have to actually be physically moving.

You get your BMR calories whether you're running or sleeping but you get extra calories when you are active. So, the more you move the more calories you burn.

Imagine you never got out of bed for days or weeks. If you didn't eat then you'd starve to death because all the time you are burning calories keeping your lungs working, your brain active etc.

Thank you for explaining it to me

Also. My band and the app doesn’t match up (steps are fine) When I open the app it deletes the calories on the band and adds what’s on the app and that’s a ridiculous amount of calories (1,424) and I  had only just put it on my wrist

That one I can't explain. Hopefully someone else will be able to.
