Inaccurate step tracking

I got myself an Inspire HR for Christmas primarily for the purpose of tracking my steps. As I had read numerous reviews, both personal and professional about how accurate the step count is, I thought it would be the perfect buy. But I was grossly disappointed (and honestly kinda downright angry) that it is far from accurate. With the Fitbit name I figured the tracking sensor would be top notch, but it says I’m taking steps while I’m sitting, while I’m washing my hands, and if my arm isn’t swinging while walking (which is downright impossible while holding a baby or pushing a stroller), no steps are counted at all. Sometimes even when my arm is swinging it won’t! Is this the case for everyone else? I’m honestly considering returning it asap. Maybe no technology exists that can track accurately. Or is there? Any response would be greatly appreciated!

Nothing worn on your wrist can really track steps exactly.  They can only detect steps from the swinging of your arms as in normal walking.    Fitbit uses algorithms to try to tell the difference between other movements and walking but obviously doesn't always get it right.  Most people find that over the course of a day the errors are relatively small.

For a few activities you might find it better to take the Fitbit off, maybe use the time for charging, such as if you  are doing a lot of knitting, playing drums, etc.  For something like washing hands, I figure they will balance out if I am going for 10,000 steps a day.  Plus I will probably wash my hands every day so it is still accurate for comparing days to each other.

For pushing a stroller or shopping cart, or walking on treadmill while holding hand rail, you can probably get better step count by putting tracker in your pocket, but then you won't be getting heart rate data.

 

But also keep in mind that besides steps, it is also getting heart rate data, which is a bigger factor in calculating calorie burn.

 

If it is into evening and I see I have 8,000 steps today, I might be motivated to take a 20 minute walk to hit my 10,000 steps.  For me, that alone makes it worthwhile.   One might say, well that was really only 9,800 steps, not really 10,000.  I would say, so what? It motivated me to get more exercise.

 

But if an exact step count is the only thing you want, you might be as well of  with something clipped to belt.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

I am also trying to evaluate my new Fitbit Inspire and am also extremely disappointed.

I previously had (and still do have) an Unchained Warrior Activity Tracker.  Search for UWTRK
003.  I have had it for two years so I don't know if they are still available.  (It only cost about $30.)

 

It is very accurate and agrees very closely with Google Maps and MapMyWalk. I have also checked the step count by counting as I walk.  This is also accurate.

 

My Fitbit exaggerates both my steps and the distance by about 20%.  Unless I can resolve this it will be returned for a refund.  If all trackers exaggerate exercise by 20% they won't be helping the fight against obesity.

Thank you for replying! I appreciate you taking the time too. Yeah, I am seriously thinking of returning. I have an older cheaper watch that tracks almost spot on and via the gps too, and I’m surprised Fitbit isn’t as accurate as that...maybe I’ll look into something else. Fitbit needs to work on detecting FAUX steps. lol
Sitting down watching TV, Picking my nose twice in an hour with my less dominant hand should not count as a step.
It should know that if it is x (lets say 2) steps in a minute it should not add them up to step count.. LOL
