The battery is running down quickly and needs recharging every 2-3 days. About 18 months old.

Hi, @amdarwin , as I am sure you are aware, all rechargeable batteries will degrade over time. How quickly that happens will in part depend on how heavily it is used, but mainly on your recharging regimens.
For longest life the ideal state for a modern rechargeable lithium ion type battery, such as used in Fitbit is between 20-80 %. So it is really best not to allow the battery to get to very deep discharge before recharging. Of course if you do this now and again it won’t cause significant harm, but regularly allowing the battery to discharge deeply will definitely shorten its life.
As the battery on your Fitbit is already showing signs of stress, I would recommend keeping the technique many people use which is the little and often technique.
For example, when you are taking your morning shower, pop it on the charger for those ten minutes or so. Or perhaps if you are watching television in the evening, and not likely to be exercising, give it half an hour on the charger.
A daily brief top for the battery will give your wrist a rest and have the added benefit of meaning your Fitbit is always ready to record your activities and your sleep.
I hope this helps!
