Outdoor bike detection algorithm needs attention

Lately I've been finding "outdoor bike" logs which have been auto detected (3 or 4 this week) but I've not been on a bike, nor even exercising.

All 'sessions' have a number of things in common:

1. I'm sitting still

2. Average heart rate is very close to my resting heart rate (and below the zones)

3. I am playing classical guitar

I don't expect auto detection of exercise to be 100% accurate but to be excising on a bike outdoors you have to be moving and I'm always sitting still when it's detected. GPS is turned on so the tracker must know I am not changing location. Surely, whatever algorithm is used to auto detect an exercise, with GPS turned on and no change in location it should not detect an exercise which has to involve changing location.

For the last week the phantom outdoor bike auto detections have been happening every day.

Hi @SunsetRunner It sounds like a glitch to me. Try restarting your Inspire several times and hopefully that will fix it.

@NellyG

Thanks for replying.

The occasional restart to fix a problem when devices become unstable may be inevitable but having to restart several times would indicate a problem with the firmware or the hardware.

Restarting has no effect on this problem. Inspire HR consistently treats guitar playing as an outdoor bike activity.

Ok, I understand now. There are some activities that to a tracker, mimic other activities. Guitar playing and piano playing and sometimes typing, and knitting or crochet are often misrecognised. The best thing to do is to remove the tracker while you are playing guitar. Probably not the solution you wanted to hear, but probably the only thing that will help.

I will wait for someone at Fitbit to reply or contact them by email. There is no way that an activity which is done sitting in one place should be recognised as one which by definition has to involve moving from one place to another when GPS is turned on and confirming there is no change of location.
