Hi, @vanloon , Fitbit uses a 3 axis accelerometer and then a computer program. Basically the device detects forward motion, vibrations and side to side motion, sends this info to a computer, and the domputer program tries to decide whether this is really a step forward or someone just brushing their teeth...
It does get it wrong sometimes: it adds steps when you are really just playing the piano, and it ignores them when you are delicately tip toeing to the refrigerator late at night so no one knows you are up and about...
But, actually, on balance, it is remarkably accurate. I am always amazed how closely it detects my activity!
Have you tried a Fitbit? They can be very addictive.
