Taking away my steps?

I’m going against a friend with our step counts and when I went into the app today to compare our steps, I watched my number drop from 65,000 something steps to 52,000. Now the person is 20,000+ ahead and there’s barely anyway I can catch back up.

You didn't say where you are looking to compare steps.  If you are looking at friends leaderboard, that is a rolling total; i.e. each midnight the oldest day gets dropped from the total and today's steps gradually get added, so it is always showing the most recent 6 full days plus so far today.  So it is normal for total to drop a bunch at midnight, then gradually climb throughout the day.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
