I have a Galaxy 10e and I can see text message notifications on my Fitbit but only gives the option to close it,  not to read it.  Does anyone know how to do the steps to read it on the Fitbit?

It could be that you are being affected by a known bug with text messages that fitbit have been investigating. Have a look at the main thread for the issue where they are posting updates:
