Because of the bold above. It needs to see the arms swinging

Fitbit detects steps from the swinging of your arms while walking.  Being on your wrist, it has no way of knowing directly what your legs are doing.  When you have your wrist held steady on a treadmill rail, or pushing baby carriage or shopping cart, steps might not be recognized.

Here are your options:

  • Continue as is, knowing calories are based on heart rate so they are good even when not getting steps.
  • Put the tracker in a pocket.  You will probably get better step count, but not any heart rate data for that time.
  • Hold rail with one hand and let the fitbit arm swing free to get both steps and heart rate data.
Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
