dongle confusion!

WHAT THE HECK IS A DONGLE? With my new Inspire Fitbit, there was only the charger in the box- should there have been something else? (Basic instructions would have been helpful) Anyway, I only have Windows 8 on my laptop (and I don't have a Smart phone), and I'm told on one of the not-so-helpful videos that I need a "dongle" - so I traveled all the way back to Sport Chek (where I bought the Fitbit) and the young man who helped me said the charger IS the dongle, they are - in his words- "one and the same". So I drove all the way back home, attached the fitbit to the charger, plugged the charger into my laptop and... nothing. So... I'm frustrated and confused. Doggone dongled right out. Help, please!!!!!

Sorry. Most people dont need a dongle. But your computer does for being  out of date.

Is there anywhere besides your Fitbit online store where I can buy a dongle without having to order online and pay for shipping.  These are additional cost that I was not expecting when I purchased my Fitbit from Best Buy.
