I don't see a way visually to see the battery level on my versa? Do I have to choose a clock face to see the battery level or check the fitbit app on my phone? Isn't there a way to see it directly on the versa?

You can choose a Clock Face that displays the battery. However, you can also slide up on the Clock screen to see your stats. The Battery level is in the upper left hand corner. Small.

When I slide up on the clock, it goes to a black screen. It's the original clockface. What am I doing wrong? Thanks!

That shouldn't happen. it should open the Today Fitbit app that shows all your current stats. I would suggest that you contact Fitbit Support. They can be reached by Facebook, Twitter or by calling.

@WebGalPat As Today app comes preloaded on your Versa and cannot be uninstalled, you should be able to access your stats by swiping up while on the main screen (clockface). If you cannot access Today screen, please try rebooting versa several times by holding left and bottom right buttons until Fitbit logo flashes. If after several reboots, the issue still persists, please perform factory reset by going to Settings on your Versa, scrolling to About and Factory reset. Please note that factory reset will erase data from your Fitbit, so sync it with your mobile first.
