Can’t read text messages.

I’m using an iphone. I just purchased and set up my versa. When I sent a test text message, I’m getting a brief pulse on the versa, a quick notification and then, when I pull down to read the text the message is “nothing new here, you’re all caught up” I’ve set and given permisdion all around. Please help. Thank you.
