I've been doing the exact same for the last week and the distance had been recorded as 2.5km, 2.8km, 2.9km, 3.39km and today's 3.65km! I set my run and I'm connected to GPS before I start. This also affects how my pace is recorded. Anyone had a similar issue and resolved it?

Welcome to the club. Distance logging does not work has never worked if you want accurate distance logging buy another brand.

Oh that's not great! I've already paid £160 for this device! May as well have bought a stop watch as that's all I can track with it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. The discrepancy you are getting are greater than I get you may see an improvement if you use .GPS connect you will need to carry your phone.
I've come to expect disappointments with fitbit it was 2 years before I realised you cannot connect to a WiFi network that has a password containing special characters. Today I found out that fitbit pay does not work with any UK banks then there was the double blow once you have tried to set up the wallet it is impossible to remove the pin security.
We all thought covid 19 stressful!
Atleast I got over that but not fitbit problems.

When I bike I use my Versa to measure the activity and also an app on my phone. Both are getting their GPS data from the same phone. I also have an old skool trip computer on the bike that measures distance via the front wheel. The app and bike computer are almost always within a few percent of each other. The Fitbit varies from being reasonably close to the app and bike to being 10% or more off. As others have said, distance on a Fitbit (much like steps) is fun to track, but is inconsistent with its accuracy.

That's what I don't get. Why is there over 1k of a difference! Guess I'll just have to go by the time it takes me to do the same route but have no idea how far I'm running! £160 when I could have bought a stop watch for £5 🙄

The discrepancy you are getting 50% is more than I would expect. If you are using GPS connect download the tracks and load them into garmin basecamp or endomondo and see how distances compare.
