Why does one day my fitbit record the distance I've run as 5k, yet the next day I can go to exactly the same spot and back and it logs it as less than 5k!!

Are your step counts similar? I'm wondering if the issue is with the number of steps being tracked is different for some reason or it's an issue with the way it converts steps into distance.

It calculates the distance by multiplying your step count by your stride length. It uses a default stride length based on your gender and height but it uses 2: one for when it thinks you are walking and one for when it thinks you are running. I'm wondering if your pace is sometimes causing it to switch to a walking stride and therefore giving shorter distances.
