Hi, @janiceharding - this is normal, it is to save battery.
If you set it in the Fitbit App, click profile photo, click device photo and enable Quick View, and sync the watch, then when you raise your wrist to look at it it will come on, or you can double tap the screen or push the button to make it display.
You can also set it directly on the watch in Settings, Screen Wake to Auto

@janiceharding- the steps in the Fitbit App are:
click profile photo,
click Versa 2 photo,
enable Quick View,
sync the watch,
Not aware of a battery save screen, you may have enabled always on.
To check go to Quick Settings
Pull down on the watch face once, as if to see notifications
Pull down again and click on the 2 white bars
Make sure the Clock icon is not enabled and the wrist icon is enabled
and the 2 icons on the top row are not enabled.
then press the back button
