My tracker indicates that a firmware update is available, but when I attempt to initiate the update, the app closes.

Since you can't see an available update in the Play Store, it could be a glitch or more probably you have been "selected" by Fitbit to test this update before the official release on the Play Store. It's also my case and I can see the update but I dont want to test for free fitbit equipment and break it, unless they pay me for that.
Before updating have a look in the forum to see how it wenf for those who went ahead with the update. I recommend to pass this one since we have zero informations about the changes and you can already see users complaining about this update.
Take your time before updating and you will avoid bad surprises.

My Versa 3 has successfully been updated to 36.128.6.17 this morning 9/08/2022. I wonder why there is no any announcement in this topic...

@chazzwell43 - as @TryDebian says, don't rush to install an update if you don't know what it does.
After consulting the forums you may consider yourself lucky the update didn't work!
