Would like clarification on how the calculation of calories over or under used is derived.

My take:
1. Fitbit takes your deficit goal and pro-rates it linearly throughout the day. So if you have a 500 calorie deficit goal then by noon it looks for a deficit of 250 between what you eat and what you have expended.
2. The over/under is based on the time you look at the tile.
3. It gives you a leeway of something like + 50 calories to be on target for your goal.

The deficit goal comes from your food plan. On the phone app tap on the calories in/calories left tile. On the next screen tap on the three dots on the upper right corner. then tap on edit food plan. The calorie deficit depends on how aggressive you want to be with weight loss. On your web dashboard, hover the cursor on either the over/under tile or the left to eat tile and then click on the gear icon that shows up underneath. This should bring up the food plan which you can edit.
BTW, the calories in/calories left numbers are based on a completely different set of metrics. It still looks at your deficit goal but it takes a look at your average expenditure for a day and makes an estimate of how many calories you will likely expend before midnight to determine how many calories you have left to eat. It does not know if you are going to be a couch potato the rest of the day or go out and run a marathon so the number can be deceiving. Just be aware and use it as a guide.
