How does the heart rate sensor works?

Is the green light meant to be on all the time, sure when I first got Fitbit it wasn’t and now battery not lasting as long.

No.  When you take it off, for example, you should see the green light turn off in a few seconds after it is placed on your dresser. If it is not doing this, try a Restart and do it several times if necessary.

I agree with our friend here, the green light you mention will work depending on your heart rate setting. If you have it "On" it will be on all the time, "Auto" it will be on when you have your watch on your wrist and you shouldn't see at all when you have it "Off".
