I bought a FitBit Versa today, I tried setting it up and it syncs with my phone, but the message "To start, download the FitBit app" still appears on the watch. Any ideas?

Hey @muireannS, welcome aboard and congrats on getting your Versa! To set up your watch, you have to do the following:
If you have issues to connect your Versa, please review the help article: Why can't I set up my Fitbit device?
Let me know how it goes!

I made a video you can follow along with that shows you how to set up your Fitbit Versa step-by-step.
You can watch it on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tF8HDt22_ZI

@HeydyF-- this guy (?) must already have a fitbit account, otherwise (s)he cannot post here... He also says it syncs...
@muireannS can you confirm that you have the mobile app installed, are logged in, seeing syncronised data? Or none of this? I read it as you have everything in place but the message of creating an account keeps appearing on your tracker, despite your tracker properly setup? Please clarify

Mine is doing the same thing. It's sweety up on my phone. It's synched. Still get the setup message on watch. Maddening. Uninstalled and reinstalled the app. No change. What garbage. Guess I'll have to return this as there appears to be no help for this issue

Similarly to my setup experience, there was a Versa update last week that I attempted to install on my phone (a OnePlus 3, not technically a supported device) which kept failing. I then tried it on an iPhone SE, and it also failed even though it is a supported device! The update eventually went through by leaving my phone with the screen awake and not touching either device for over an hour! I believe the FitBit software is pretty buggy with downloads and stuff... I would recommend trying it with another phone as the Versa is a great device, just a pain to set up!

The link "How do I connect" was especially helpful. It tells you how to find out what kind of Web security you have.

i have a new versatile but I already have an old Fitbit and the Fitbit app. Do I need to remove the app and reinstall it in order to activate the new versa?

Which Fitbit app? There are a ton of Fitbit apps and I'm confused.
