Inaccurate mileage while running

I have been loving using my Versa during workouts because I no longer need my phone to listen to music.  However, I am finding that my Versa isn't accurate with my mileage unless I also have my phone with me (which defeats the purpose of getting the Versa).  I have tried to run with the phone and the next couple of runs without my Versa will be accurate.  I've tried opening the Fitbit app on my phone before leaving.  I've tried starting the run option on my Versa to connect with my phone prior to leaving.  These latter two have not helped.  Is there any tips on how to improve the accuracy of mileage (and pace) via the Versa?

If you are not connecting to your phone's GPS, mileage is calculated as number of steps times stride length.  If your stride length is off, so will be your distance.

See How do I measure and adjust stride length for my Fitbit device?

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
