There is a new symbol at the top of my Versa screen. It's a circle with a dash in the middle of it. Goes away when I swipe down to look at notifications but is there each time I wake up the watch.  What does it mean?

That means you are in 'Do Not Disturb' mode, the same symbol you would see scrolling left from clockface to 'Quick Settings'.  There are a few such symbols that were fairly recently added, maybe one to show you are in Sleep Mode and one to show you are out of bluetooth range from phone.  They should stay on display for just a few seconds, then go away on their own.  They are like a quick warning that you have a setting on that you might not want, such as to let you know why you are getting any notifications (DND).

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
