I woke up yesterday morning and put on my Versa which was charging overnight. When it synced, I had over 35,000 steps! By the end of the day I was over 50,000. What is going on with this thing?

Is the Fitbit near a vibration source like a fan, dehumidifier, or even a computer CPU? It can see the vibration as steps and add false steps.

@Angie16 No flaw. Laptop can't generate ghost steps even if your tracker was lying on it. The issue of ghost steps described by OP has been addressed in the new Versa firmware update that is currently being rolled out (.19). You can either wait until is available or perform a factory reset of your Versa which will download the latest version automatically. I would wait if your Versa is performing without issues.
