Okay I'll try to keep this short as I already made another post on the subject. Couple weeks ago I got my versa and the first few nights it did the the sleep tracking with patterns correctly like it should. Then it started reverting back to the old way of sleeping by not monitoring my heart rate. I did several Factory resets, moved it around on my arm, all of these things and nothing worked. So yesterday I returned it and got a different unit. Last night it didn't track sleep correctly either. In the mornings when I wake up I notice that the light on the bottom is green and red flashing not solid green as usual. So should I assume it's a firmware issue and hope it will eventually be fixed? I kind of feel like two units doing the exact same thing that it's probably not a unit issue. I'm very disappointed because the Sleep patterns was one of the selling points for me with the Versa.

According to @MarreFitbit in this thread, the red light on the back of the Versa is normal. It helps sense when you're sleeping and when you wake up.
Try the new Versa tonight and see if it does the same thing (mine didn't record correctly either last week) and if that doesn't work, you may want to contact Support.

@DaNealZ Try performing a factory reset of the new unit. I know you just got it and set it up, but a new version of firmware .19 is being available to a small group of users. As of now the only way of getting .19 is to factory reset. The versa will download the new firmware automatically. Good luck.

Unfortunately both units were on the newest version of the firmware. Last night I wore it very loose and restarted it as soon as I woke up. Also I let it determine my sleep automatically. My sleep patterns are as they should be this morning. Now to figure out which trick worked!

I just had a short but sweet chat with customer service and he indicated that if you go to the app and select begin to sleep now the Sleep settings don't work. That you just need to let the watch do it automatically. So I will continue to not use this and see if things work.

@DaNealZ I'm not sure I understand. Could you please explain? I thought that versa simply stopped measuring your heartrate.
