is there a way of starting a sleep cycle from the Fitbit Versa watch itself? currently the only way i can see of logging the start of a sleep cycle is through the app.

You could just wear your fitbit to bed and let it auto-detect your sleep. See: https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1314

My Versa is not auto detecting sleep for me.
