Steps vs miles

I got my Fitbit Versa to help track my steps and how far I have walked. I'm trying to lose weight and thought this would be a good way to track everything. The steps and distance (miles) are off. It takes me over 2000 steps to register a mile. This morning I walked 3000 steps and it registered 1. 24 miles. How do I get the steps and distance to sync? I know 2000 steps is 1 mile therefore 3000 steps should equal 1.5 miles. If I walk over 6000 steps it registers 2.4 miles. I thought this $200+ technology would help, but it just makes me frustrated with its inaccuracies. I have reset it several times. Do I keep it or take it back where I bought it, if they will take it back? I don't know.

@Taydee  I does not sound like you are using connected-gps, correct. Then distance is calculated from steps according to the 'stride length', which you find under advanced settings. You can set these manually or have fitbit make a guess (I think the latter is the default). It is best (imho) to set a manual value - just walk a known distance and see how many steps you used. Divide distance by steps and that is your stride. There are two values, one for walking and one for running. If you are walking only you can ignore the running one. And yes, normally 2x steps --> 2x distance. If it is not, it is most likely due to some auto-stride. Give it a try and let the community know how it goes!
