Suggestion to Developers/Swim

I was directed to this community by a customer service agent, so I'm hopeful that my request will be read by someone who works in product/app development. I have the Versa, a new purchase after many years with another brand of tracker, synched to a Samsung GS8+.

I am pleased that trackers are making some attempt to include swimming in the exercises able to be tracked, and for the most part, my Versa works well with this. I typically start/end my swim app manually, so there is no question as to when my swim workout starts/stops.

The app more-or-less accurately identifies my strokes as I swim, but developers seem unaware that swim training very often includes drills that are not one of the 4 recognized strokes. If your arm movements mimic the motions of one of the major strokes, all is fine, but if you are doing kick drills (no arm involvement), the app can't recognize what the swimmer is doing. I completely understand that and understand that in such a situation my stroke would be called "unknown" by the device.

The problem is that the device won't even recognize that as I kick I'm continuing to go back and forth across the pool. It just stops tracking my movement all together if my arms aren't doing anything. Kick drills are not tracked as "unknown"--they are just ignored altogether. My final lap/yardage stats are nowhere near accurate due to this omission.

My suggestion is that the app be updated to at least recognize in this situation that the swimmer continues to go back and forth across the pool, and to at least track the lengths/distance (via the connected GPS, which is already set up), even if the stroke is logged as "unknown."

Virtually every serious swimmer I know includes kicking drills in their training. This would be a huge, and much appreciated improvement for us.

Thank you!

The Versa does not contain a GPS chip so if it doesn't detect motion there is no way it can be programmed to meet your needs.

I know it doesn't have it's own GPS, but the customer service agent explained that it utilizes the GPS capabilities of the paired device (cell phone), which is how it is able to track & display my walks on a map. Isn't the same principle at work here? Or does that only work if the paired device is in my posession at the time?
I'm new to this tracker and interested to learn more, so thank you to those who have better technical understanding than I.

I wonder about Charge 4 and other new devices that do contain internal GPS: could it work while swimming?  (assuming you’re not underwater the whole time😅)
