I am looking to upgrade from my surge and was interested in the Versa but I have just read that in order to track a run I would need to have my phone with me also,

Is this correct or will it track with the GPS like my surge currently does?

The Versa doesn't have inbuilt GPS like the Surge so if you want to track your run using GPS then you will have to take your phone with you. The Versa will then link to the phone and use its GPS.

If you'd prefer to not take your phone then the Versa will still track your run but without GPS it will not be able to produce a map and will estimate distance using your step count and stride length.

Alternatively, you could look at the Ionic which does have GPS built in. To compare the features of the Versa and Ionic see http://www.fitbit.com/compare
