Versa 3 microphone not working

I cannot get the microphone to pick up any voice for voice assistant or voice replies to messages. I talk, nothing happens. I've tried with Google assistant,  and Alexa both. With phone right beside me. Am I missing something or is my brand new watch defective?

Do you have it enabled in the watch's settings?

Indeed I do. I even called fitbit on the phone after posting here and they walked me through a factory reset on the watch. The microphone,  and sound actually worked for about an hour afterwards. Much to my disappointment it's right back where it was currently and the microphone is not picking up anything at all
