Had a notification to update software, which I did. Now swipe up is just black.
have unconnected and reconnected device and it’s still the same.
any ideas to rectify this?

Please restart your Versa 3 as suggested here How do I restart my Fitbit device? If the restart doesn't work try to change your clock face. If this fixes the issue, you can change your clock face back to the original clock face.

How do you change the clock face if the screen is black??? I have tried all the reset and hold the button for 10 seconds or 15 seconds and the screen is still not responding. I can feel it vibrate but nothing happens. On or off the charger. I'm not sure why every tracker I've had has SOME type of issue.

If your Fitbit device is still syncing (you can verify this by going to your Fitbit account, tap the Today tab > your profile picture > your device image. ) you can change the clock face even if the screen is blank. For more information, see How do I change the clock face on my Fitbit device?
