The watch suddenly switched to "to start, please install fit it app" and has been so for last two hours. I uninstalled and reinstalled the app, was told I needed software update but it won't connect over wifi or Bluetooth. I have restarted my phone, restarted the watch, force quit the fitbit app, and have checked that I'm on android version 14. Support seems very unhelpful as FB isn't available, I have received no call back, and I don't have X.

Let me help you with your Versa 3 that is stuck in the firmware update. Thank you for the troubleshooting steps you have already followed.
In effect, your device needs to be connected to your mobile in order to update its firmware. By the message you see on your Versa 3, i suspect the firmware wasn't successfully completed. Once you are able to sync an update banner should show on the top of the screen. If you don't see it, tap the devices icon and then your Versa 3 and then Gallery. The app should show a pop up to install the missing apps and recover the device.
