Versa-Difficulties with connected GPS

Had another hike today where GPS Connected failed, AGAIN. During the hike I randomly looked at my Versa and,  roughly half the time, the Versa was trying to connect. Needless to say, the map of the hike and the distance recorded are completely wrong.

  • Samsung Galaxy S8 on Oreo ( although the problem started before I finally got the Oreo update)
  • 2.7 version of the Fitbit app
  • I restarted the phone's bluetooth prior to the hike
  • Fitbit app was in the foreground.
  • I waited the 30 seconds or so until the GPS finally connected before starting the hike. As it turns out, it almost immediately disconnected and didn't reconnect for quite awhile, according to the map.
  • Hiking in the Phoenix Mountain Preserves. There is no GPS blockage problem.
  • Other GPS tracking apps that run entirely on the phone have never had a problem.
  • Other GPS apps were not running this time. Connected GPS still failed.
  • I started having this problem with my Charge 2 (pre-Android Oreo) just before I got the Versa.

It's too bad. I really like the Versa as it's quite visible outside in our desert sunshine, unlike the Charge 2. I still have time to return it...

My simular issue with GPS was mostly resolved with a Versa Reset (hold left and bottom right buttons until it vibrates and logo displays).

I did this a couple of days ago. I didn't think to do it just before this hike, unfortunately.

Having to run through a whole checklist in the hopes of having it work correctly is just wrong.

Yesterday's hike

  • Fitbit 4 miles, more often than not GPS was connecting
  • Alltrails app 4.6 miles

At first glance both GPS tracks look pretty similar, except for the very beginning where the Fitbit immediately lost the connection after I verified it had connected. Zoom in on sections, however, and the Fitbit track jumps all over the place.

This was with Android version 2.7 and I see there is now a 2.71.
