Versa Lite not tracking right

My versa lite is 2 years old and is not tracking right. I set it at my house, walked to my friends who then set hers..so effectively I should hit 10k before her .... nope nope registered 10k about 10 mins before me ?  How is this happening. I've noticed before mine says I'm not doing steps but I am !
