I’ve had my new watch for about 5 hours. When I turned it on and set it up (sitting on my couch) I apparently took 100 steps. I have been sitting on the couch rocking my baby since then and I am watching the step count rise when I have not taken ANY steps. Is there a fix for this? If not I will return tomorrow and buy a Garmin

No tracker worn on your wrist can know what your legs are doing.
It normally detects steps from the normal swinging of your arms while walking. Some regular rhythmic movements look just like walking to your tracker on wrist. Fitbit tries to tell the difference but that's not always possible. In addition to rocking baby, these include knitting, playing drums or strumming guitar, etc. Most people find the error introduced by this are not significant over a full day, but for some activities it might be better to take off tracker to avoid too many extra steps.
Be aware that calories are based mainly on heart rate so extra steps do not automatically make calorie burn incorrect.
Of course feel free to try a Garmin, or any other, instead, but I don't see how any tracker worn on wrist can avoid this situation.

If it is getting steps on the table, is it subject to vibrations, such as a running fan on the table?
Another thing to try is a restart. Hold in the side button for 10 seconds or until you see the Fitbit logo.
