I bought the versa because it's waterproof. Wore it in my pool first time today
it did not count my steps in the water. Is this normal?

Yes I would say that sounds pretty normal. It's mostly down to how wrist based trackers count/detect steps (a limitation you could say). When you are walking on dry land the tracker users sensors (accelerometer) to detect each step taken, this is through a combination of arm movement and vibrations from the step itself (your foot hitting the ground). When you are in water both of these movements are dampened somewhat (not as noticeable), so it's harder for the tracker to see what it's looking for to count a step. That's not to say it won't count any steps, and if you were to swim it's quite possible it will count your arm strokes as steps.
