Whilst doing the update on my versa today the screen stuck in Shortcut highlighting that I should push the left button, but that does not change the screen. How can I return to the ho e screen.

Have you tried restarting your Versa by following the steps here?

Yes I have tried but it does not restart as the back button seems unresponsive.

It sounds like a hardware issue with the operation of the button then.
I think the best thing at this point would be for you to contact customer support (here), they should be able to check your warranty status and advise you of your options.

I did an update today and it did the same thing. Was told since I am out of warranty, even though it worked fine before the update, they can only offer me a 25% discount on a new one. I am switching to Apple. I could see having to buy a new one if I caused the failure, but I realized I should never have performed the update to begin with. Don't fix what wasn't broke...unless you want to put out more cash.
