Notifications told me initial update failed. But did not say how to restart. Everything works with the exception of notifications. This should not be this hard?
Oh oh one last thing. How do you get back to the clock. I always seem to be swiping and clicking and never find the time.

Hello there @Eherby, awesome to see you have joined the Fitbit Community! I'm wondering if this initial update refers to the Firmware version?
Is the notifications failing in general or is only in specific apps? Perhaps the following help article will give you some extra help: My Fitbit device isn't receiving notifications from my phone
Also which mobile device platform are you using? Note that with the latest version of the Fitbit app for Android there is an error and if you have Android, it might explain why you re not receiving notifications. For more details refer to this post.
About returning to the Home screen (Clock face), just press the back button. The Clock face will depend of the choice you hace selected in your Fitbit app settings.
If the issue persists perhaps a restart will do the trick. You can find the steps here: How do I restart my Fitbit device?
